Most popular travel spots have a  high tourist season when the number of  visitors to the region is the highest. Most hotels, lodging, airlines and other facilities are usually booked fully during this time of  the year. The rates charged are also much higher. Depending on their budget, tourists can choose to travel in the high travel season or off season.

The tourist season for a travel destination is based on the following factors:

1. The weather is the main factor which defines the high tourist season. Most popular travel destinations have pleasant weather during the peak tourist season. For tropical regions, the weather in winter is pleasant, but temperatures during summer are very high. Temperate regions like North America and Europe have extremely cold winters and pleasant summers, so most tourists will visit during summer.

2. Festivals, pilgrimages and religious functions - Even if  the weather is unpleasant, many tourists will visit a region for a religious occasion. Many tourist destinations will hold shopping festivals

3. School /college schedules, financial year endings:  Many visitors with school going students will schedule their holiday, so that it coincides with their children's school holidays, so that their studies are not disturbed.  Also, not many employees get leave from their office when the financial accounting year draws to a close, since the work load in most organizations is maximum.
